28. August 2024 – Day 3 of our bicycle tour was both enriching and exhausting, filled with historical insights, cultural experiences, and picturesque landscapes. After a hearty breakfast at Pension Benedikt, we set off on our journey towards Simbach am Inn, with several memorable stops along the way.
Morning at Pension Benedikt
Our day began with a delightful breakfast at Pension Benedikt, a charming guesthouse steeped in history. The owner shared a fascinating tidbit: the former Pope Benedict XVI once stayed here. We learned that he had spent part of his childhood in the village, where he attended grade school and took his first communion. This connection to such a prominent figure added a layer of significance to our stay, making us feel as though we were part of a living history.
Cycling to Altötting
By 9:30 AM, we were back on our bikes, pedaling towards our first stop of the day: Altötting. The ride was smooth, with the morning air still fresh and invigorating. Upon reaching Altötting, we took the opportunity to visit the St. Anne Basilica, a stunning example of Baroque architecture. The basilica, with its ornate interiors and serene atmosphere, provided a peaceful respite from the physical exertion of cycling. The town itself is a significant pilgrimage site, known for the Black Madonna in the Chapel of Grace, which we unfortunately couldn’t explore due to time constraints. Nonetheless, the visit to the basilica was a highlight, offering a moment of reflection amid our journey.
A Stop in Burghausen
Our next destination was Burghausen, where we planned to spend a bit more time. The ride to Burghausen was challenging, with a few steep inclines that tested our endurance. However, the effort was well worth it. Burghausen is home to the world’s longest castle, stretching over a kilometer atop a ridge. The sight of the castle was awe-inspiring, a testament to the medieval architecture and the town’s rich history. After exploring the castle grounds, we treated ourselves to some well-deserved coffee and ice cream in the town center. The break was much needed, allowing us to recharge before the final leg of our journey.
The Final Stretch to Simbach am Inn
With about 25 kilometers left to Simbach am Inn, we resumed our journey. The ride was relatively straightforward, but the fatigue from the day’s exertions was starting to set in. The landscape along the way was beautiful, with rolling hills and lush fields, but by this point, our focus was on reaching our destination. We finally arrived in Simbach am Inn in the early evening, thoroughly exhausted but satisfied with the day’s accomplishments.
A Well-Deserved Rest
After a long day of cycling, we treated ourselves to a well-deserved dinner, savoring the local cuisine. The meal was a perfect end to a physically demanding day, providing us with the energy we would need for the next leg of our tour. After dinner, we retired early, eager to rest and rejuvenate for the journey from Simbach am Inn to Kasten in Passau.
Conclusion
Day 3 of our bicycle tour was a perfect blend of history, culture, and natural beauty. From the historical insights at Pension Benedikt to the majestic sight of Burghausen Castle, each stop along the way enriched our experience. Despite the physical challenges, the sense of accomplishment and the memories we created made every kilometer worthwhile. As we prepare for the next day’s adventure, we carry with us the stories and sights from today, looking forward to what lies ahead on our journey.
